What is Acne?
Acne is a hereditary condition brought
on by hormonal changes that cause
the oil glands to secrete too much
oil (sebum). Excessive sebum, along
with dead skin cells, creates a blockage
in the pore, which breeds bacteria
(Propionibacterium acnes). As a result,
the pore becomes swollen, inflamed,
and irritated. Acne may be aggravated
further by emotional stress, environmental
factors, picking at a pimple (which
can spread bacteria, causing more
pimples), and occasionally by diet.
Who Gets Acne
and Acne Scars?
Approximately 17 million people in
the U.S. have acne & acne scars,
and although it’s most common
in teenagers and young adults (85
percent of people between the ages
of 12 and 24), acne can also pose
an issue for those in their early
thirties and beyond.
